DESCRIPTION: A summer school with the topic of Biomimetics: Principles, Models and Applications will be organized within the conference ICSAAM2025.

This summer school will be focused on the transfer of knowledge from natural systems into engineering systems. The speakers will introduce you to the main laws of biology, physics and chemistry that function in nature and will continue with the presentation of combined multidisciplinary models for the reproduction of natural mechanisms in lab engineering. The highlight of this summer school is related to the holistic approach that promotes science as the overall knowledge database with the different scientific fields interconnected and inseparable. Within this context, the process of understanding the natural world functioning becomes an unlimited source of inspiration in engineering.

Speaker 1: Dr. D. V. Porţan, University of Patras, GREECE

Short Description: The first part of the course will consist in an extended introduction of the principles of biomimetics in nature. These refer to physical, biological and chemical laws that govern the natural mechanisms. Correlation of the different fields of science is the key to producing advanced biomimetic technological outcomes. The class will use a scheme that combines principles, basic knowledge and advanced research for innovative science, in harmony with our natural world processes.

Speaker 2: Dr. N. Athanasopoulos, FORTH Institute of Chemical Engineering Sciences, Patras, GREECE

Short Description: This course will be about biomimetics for responsive structures and thermal management. The classes will explore key strategies behind the thermonastic and thermotropic movements observed in plants. To illustrate these concepts, we will showcase several smart materials and highlight their unique capabilities, as models, together with associated applications.
